The Government has confirmed that Devon will move to a new system of four unitary councils, replacing the current two-tier arrangement of Devon County Council and district councils.

For Stokeinteignhead, this means that from 2028 the parish will become part of an expanded Torbay Unitary Authority, which will be responsible for delivering all principal local government services currently provided by both Devon County Council and Teignbridge District Council.

The Government’s decision follows proposals submitted by councils across Devon and a public consultation earlier this year.  Over the next two years, detailed plans will be developed to manage the transition, with elections to the new authorities expected in 2027 and the new councils formally taking over in 2028.

There will be no immediate changes to council services.  Residents should continue to access services as they do now while the new arrangements are put in place.

The Government has now launched its consultation on the five proposals for the reorganisation of local authorities in Devon 🏛️. This is an important opportunity for residents and businesses to share their views.

Last year, councils across the county developed proposals for new single-tier (unitary) authorities. Teignbridge District Council, together with six other district councils worked on a joint proposal called Reimagining Devon, which would see the creation of three unitary authorities:

🔹 Exeter and Northern Devon – East Devon, Exeter, Mid Devon, North Devon and Torridge
🔹 Torbay and Southern Devon – South Hams, Teignbridge, Torbay and West Devon
🔹 Plymouth City Council – remaining as a standalone unitary authority

The Government is now consulting on all proposals submitted, and you are invited to take part.

A big thank you to the homeowner for kindly agreeing to host and install it on their property 👏🙌. This lifesaving piece of equipment will be a valuable resource for our community.

The cabinet is coded for security – the defibrillator should only be used when told to do so by the emergency services who will provide the code if necessary.
